I want to apply to be an RA, but I hear it's really competitive. Should I apply?
TherAlthough a large amount of candidates generally apply, we encourage anyone who thinks they would be a good RA to apply. Who knows? You may be exactly who we're looking for!
What are you looking for in RAs?
In general, we look for candidates who exhibit strong leadership abilities or potential, have good communication skills, are hard working, dependable and responsible, think creatively, are good team players, and are enthusiastic about being an RA and helping our residents! We have an incredibly diverse staff of RAs. Every RA has a different style, background, and perspective that will contribute uniquely to our team. The best thing you can do throughout the selection process is to be yourself. We want to know how you will think, feel and respond as an RA.
Is it a requirement to live at the property I am assigned to work at?
RAs are considered live-on staff, meaning that they are required to physically reside in the community which they serve.
Will I have an advantage if I've already signed a lease for the 2015-2016 year?
Thank you for choosing to live with us next year! Renewals and leases however are not factored into the evaluation or hiring process and is not an advantage or disadvantage. In planning for next year, you are encouraged to sign your lease if you know you would like to still live at Casas del Rio or Lobo Village even if you are not an RA.
Do I have to be a current resident to be eligible for the position?
No. Currently living with us at Casas del Rio or Lobo Village is not a requirement to apply.
What experience do I need to have before being an RA?
There's no particular set of experiences that you are required to have before becoming an RA. Our RAs come from an array of backgrounds and experiences, none more important than the other. Even if you don't have any work experience, but are eager and quick to learn, you have the potential to become a great RA!
Eligibility
Can I send in more than two letters of recommendation?
No. We will only be assessing two letters of recommendation per candidate file. Any additional documents will not be utilized as part of the evaluation process.
Can I mail in my unofficial transcript/letter of recommendation?
Yes. All mailed in documents must be postmarked no later than February 9 to be considered on time. Please mail them to:
Nikki Wee-Moretto
1200 Avenida Cesar Chavez
Albuquerque, NM 87106
Can I reapply this year if I previously applied and wasn't offered a position then?
Candidates who have applied previously are eligible to apply again this year. However, please make sure you pay attention to this year's application process as requirements and processes have been adjusted from previous years. All candidates will be required to participate in the group and individual interviews even if they have gone through them before.
It's after the application deadline. Can I still apply?
Out of fairness to other candidates, late applications unfortunately will not be accepted. If you are still interested in a future position, please feel free to contact us, or look out for details on future opportunities.
Who should I contact if I have questions about the application or interview process?
You may contact Resident Director Caleb Cionelo at ccionelo@studenthousing.com, or Nikki Wee-Moretto, Assistant General Manager of Residence Life, at yweemoretto@studenthousing.com.
Application
Interview Process
What should I wear to the interviews?
The dress code for the group interview is business casual, and the dress code for individual interviews is business professional. What exactly does this mean? Click here for a visual of examples, or stop by the Career Center and ask a counselor for guidance. During the group interview, you will be doing some moving around, so we'd encourage you to wear something comfortable.
What happens if I don't receive an offer?
Unfortunately, we won't be able to offer everyone who applies a position. However, we encourage you to stay in touch as there will always be opportunities to re-apply in the future. There may also be unexpected openings that arise throughout the year, in which you may be contacted about.
Is the group interview required?
Yes. All candidates must go through the group interview as part of the evaluation process.
RA Expectations
Am I allowed to have another job or commitments while being an RA?
Yes! The RA position is fairly flexible, and many of our current and past RAs have successfully been able to balance this position along with other part-time jobs, internships, and campus involvement. However, we do ask that you balance your time to allow for you to fulfill your responsibilities as an RA. RAs should discuss their outside responsibilities with their Resident Director during their first one-on-one meeting.
Is RA training required?
RA training takes place July 7-15 and is required of all RAs, even returning RAs. Training is a time where you will not only learn about the various aspects of your job, but is also a time to bond with your fellow staff.
What training will RAs receive?
During training, you'll be equipped with the tools necessary to being a successful RA. Trianing topics will include a variety of topics, including but not limited to: Leasing and Marketing, Community Building, Programming, Communications, Operations, Conflict Management, Crisis Management, Diversity, Safety, and more.
What are the expectations in regards to RAs working over the breaks?
Our halls remain open during all breaks, and staffing is required to serve our residents' needs. RAs are generally expected to fairly split up the breaks so everyone has an opportunity to have time off. Decisions are made within staffs.
Logistics
Do I get to select where I want to be an RA at?
We are running one selection process between Casas del Rio and Lobo Village, and will be selecting candidates for each property based on each staff and community's needs. Management will be assessing your strengths, backgrounds and experiences to determine the community you will be most successful at. You will be given an opportunity during the individual interview to state if you have any particular preferences. While it's not guaranteed, Management will do their best to take this into consideration during placements.
How many RA positions are available?
We concurrently will be running the re-application process for any current staff that desires to return as an RA. Because of this, we don't have an exact number. However, we generally can expect that approximately half of our current staff will leave at the end of their term for a variety of reasons such as graduation, study abroad, or other job opportunities. Based on this estimate, we will likely have about 20-25 positions available to fill with a new applicant.
Do RAs have roommates?
At Lobo Village, RAs are paired up with three apartment roommates. Casas del Rio offers some of its more senior staff the opportunity to live in a private room, but the majority of RAs will have a roommate and two suitemates. Just like our residents, RAs will be able to select who they wish to have as a roommate, or be assigned based on our roommate matching system.
